Lifetime Value (LTV)

Lifetime Value (LTV)

LTV is also the single easiest number in a pitch deck to quietly inflate – and the first one we recalculate ourselves in diligence. Lifetime Value is a key marketing metric estimating the total revenue a business can expect to generate from a specific group of customers over time – calculated as average revenue per user divided by churn rate. Marketers use LTV to allocate budget more effectively and identify their most valuable customers.

In gaming specifically, LTV reflects the total revenue a player is expected to generate across their entire relationship with a game – in-app purchases, subscriptions, and ad revenue combined – calculated as average revenue per user multiplied by customer lifetime. When a game's LTV surpasses its cost per install, that is a signal of sustainable growth potential. The catch is that LTV is a forecast built on assumptions about future churn, and those assumptions are exactly where an optimistic model quietly overstates the number.

What Feeds Into LTV

Session length, frequency of play, and depth of user interaction – in-game actions, social behaviour, content consumption – all feed into the LTV picture and together help developers identify where to refine content and where retention strategies will have the most impact.

Common Mistakes in LTV Calculation

  •  Low early retention. Addressed through better onboarding, personalised retention strategies, and timely push notifications.
  • High drop-off after first purchase. Mitigated with progressive reward systems, exclusive content for paying players, and behaviour-based dynamic pricing.
  • Free-to-play/pay imbalance. Resolved by keeping core gameplay accessible, using time-limited events and tiered rewards, and keeping pay elements optional rather than intrusive.
  • Declining engagement. Addressed through regular content updates, social features like leaderboards, and engagement-driven reward systems.
  • Monetisation fatigue. Managed by placing ads strategically, limiting purchase prompts, and offering an ad-free subscription tier.

THE VENTANA VIEW

If your LTV model has not been recalculated since your seed round, it is not a model anymore – it is a memory. We ask for the recalculation cadence before we ask for the number itself.
