 Operational Efficiency

A large DAU number is one of the least useful things a founder can put on the first slide of a pitch – and yet it is still where most decks lead. DAU is a vanity metric: it shows activity, not whether players are retained or monetised effectively. Operational efficiency refers to optimising business processes and resources to reduce operating costs while maintaining or improving productivity. In gaming specifically, it is the ability to deliver engaging player experiences while maximising lifetime value and minimising acquisition, development, and operating costs – expressed simply as player lifetime value divided by the sum of acquisition, development, and operating cost.

Player Economics

A healthy LTV/CAC ratio – commonly a benchmark of 3:1 – shows that players generate significantly more value than they cost to acquire. Strong Day-1, Day-7, and Day-30 retention extends player lifecycles, while high churn erodes the return on every acquisition dollar spent; low-cost A/B tests on onboarding flows are often the fastest way to move Day-1 retention. Payback period, cohort analysis, and a genuinely data-driven approach to segmenting users and tailoring rewards all feed into the same underlying goal: improving retention and LTV while minimising unnecessary incentive spend.

Cost Discipline

Cash remains the most important constraint. Benchmarking monthly burn against revenue milestones, documenting cost per feature, and killing features that miss ROI benchmarks all sharpen discipline. On user acquisition, balancing paid and organic channels reduces reliance on expensive paid ads, while tracking marketing attribution lets a team cut underperforming channels quickly. Hiring slow and hiring right, with multi-role, T-shaped talent, extends runway further than almost any other lever we have seen founders pull.

Profitability Metrics

EBITDA margin is the headline profitability metric, with healthy gaming benchmarks typically sitting in the 15–30% range, underpinned by a gross margin in the 40–45% range as a prerequisite. Diversifying revenue across in-app purchases, ads, and subscriptions reduces dependency on any single stream, and knowing runway in weeks rather than months sharpens financial discipline.

THE VENTANA VIEW

We look past DAU to unit economics – LTV/CAC and payback period – on every deal we evaluate. A smaller, highly engaged base with strong ARPU and retention is always the better business, even when it looks smaller on the first slide. Never celebrate downloads without a revenue story attached.
